The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has said that the media, as the fourth estate of the realm, has a critical responsibility to amplify government policies, inform the public, and educate society.Dr. Worlu made this statement while addressing journalists during the enforcement of the ban on illegal markets, street trading, and unauthorized motor parks at the popular Oil Mill Market axis in Obio/Akpor.
According to him, government at the local level bears a direct responsibility to the people and must carry out its duties conscientiously.
The chairman explained that the ongoing enforcement exercise was a fulfillment of one of his campaign promises to address the perennial problem of street trading in Obio/Akpor.
Dr. Worlu noted that the council conducted a thorough analysis of the situation before commencing enforcement, stressing that the action was taken in the best interest of residents.
He reiterated that the local government has clear policies in place, including no trading on the road and no indiscriminate parking, adding that compliance is non-negotiable.
The chairman further disclosed that the enforcement followed due process, noting that traders were adequately notified and sensitized before the exercise began.
He also warned residents against purchasing food items sold on the roadside, describing such practices as harmful.
